Year 5 Spring 2 2015 “What is this life?” Skills Literacy Reading Summarise the main ideas from a text and identifying key ideas that support ideas. Explain and discuss their understanding of what they have read. Prove reasoned justifications of their views. Writing Use a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs. Organise ideas using subheadings. Grammar and Punctuation Use modal verbs to indicate degrees of possibility. Ensure the correct and consistent tense throughout a piece of writing, Propose changes to enhance the meaning of writing. Spelling Words spelt ‘ei’, ‘eigh’ or ‘ey’. Words spelt with ei after c. Words with silent letters. Science – Living things and their habitats. Describe the differences in the life cycle of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird. Describe the life processes of reproduction in some plants and animals. Find out about the work of naturalists such as David Attenborough. Compare life cycles in different parts of the world. RE Did God intend for Jesus to be crucified and was Jesus aware of this? Maths Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. Round any number up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 10, 1000, 10000 and 100000. Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits and apply these in problem solving situations. Use column addition and subtraction. Use rounding to estimate and check answers. Divide numbers up to 4 digits by using formal methods and interpret remainders appropriately. Use inverse to check answers. Identify 3D shapes from a 2D drawing. Convert between different units of measurement e.g. km, m, cm, mm, l, ml, g, kg. History Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of world history. Construct informed responses that involve thoughtful selection and organisation of relevant historical information. Note connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms PE Swimming lessons. Athletics – Sustain a running technique. Show accuracy in jumping and throwing. Computing Design and write programmes that accomplish specific goals, including stimulating specific goals. Art Create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review ideas. Improve on mastery of sketching with pencil and chalk. French To understand simple classroom instructions. Describe the colour of an animal and it’s size. Recognise my school subjects in French. Music Use and understand staff and other musical notations. Develop an understanding of the history of music.

Year 5 Spring 2 2015 “What is this life?” Suggested Activities Literacy Explanations – write an explanation about underwater creatures and creatures on land. Narratives – write a story that involves dinosaurs. Dinosaurs could be the characters in the story. Write a story based on the Mayans so it links to our history topic. Poetry – Write and perform poems based on mythical creatures. Britain’s Got Talent style. Maths Know times tables up to 12 x 12 and get full marks on the quiz. Start to memorise division facts too. Bus stop method. Use our own knowledge to test each other on how to round numbers. Apply these skills to problems we write ourselves. Measure real ingredients and convert our own measurements. Change the measurement used in a recipe and test it out. Measure the distance between things in different units of measure. Apply our addition and subtraction skills in lots of problem solving. Science Grow our own vegetables in our environment and watch how they grow. Keep a diary of the growth of plants. Try and grow our own plants from different cuttings and explain why they work and don’t work. Describe how different animals reproduce and grow. RE Recreate the Easter story using drama. Create our own film. Write a diary entry as though we were there when Jesus destroyed the temple and talk about his feelings. Examine texts from the Bible that teach us about Holy Week, Learn how Christians feel at Easter time. History Who were the Mayans? What did they eat? Where did they live? How are they different from us? Investigate the answers to these questions. Make some food using Mayan recipes. PE Swimming lessons every Thursday. Swim a full length of the pool. Athletics – Relay races with different types of running. Olympic style games. Art/DT. Learn how to sketch in different ways by looking at techniques of different artists. Sketch animals. Create a comic strip of pencil drawings. French Speak in French for a whole lesson to see if we are able to understand what is being said. Describe our own pets. Music Listen to music that has been performed in different years and recreate our favourite piece. Change our own drawings that show a piece of music to use correct music notations. Computing Create a programme using a code that makes a model move. Make our own game. Watch how each other makes a game using code.
