Family is a group of people who are related by blood, marriage, or adoption, live together, are an economic unit, and bear and raise children. Community is a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.

Family and community are providing children with a sense of belonging and a unique identity. Family is, or should be, a source of emotional support, warmth and nurturing, protection and security. Family relationships and community provide children with a critical sense of being valued and with a vital network of historical linkages and social support. http://www.healthychildren.org

There are many political comments and differences on whether it takes a village or a family to raise a child. Researchers are aware that a child need both a Family and community to reach to the optimal levels of development, so schools must seek to support and partner with both families and communities.

Partnership refers to equal rights for & responsibilities of all three entities also, it imply that power bases are equal. Margaret noted that children have needs, but that children are needed by families and communities. Children Families Communities

Two keys sources of evidence that inform early childhood educators about the essential need for partnerships among the adults in a child’s life include developmental assets and the irreducible needs of children. developmental assets: critical factors necessary for children’s healthy development. irreducible needs: needs that are basic to children’s survival and optimal development.

The irreducible needs of children Ongoing nurturing relationships. Physical protection, safety, and regulation. Experiences that consider the individual differences of children. Experiences that are developmentally appropriate. Appropriate limits, predictable structure, and reasonable expectations A stable, supportive community Cultural continuity.
