The term “Manifest Destiny” was used in the 1800’s to express the belief that the united states was divinely inspired to spread democracy and freedoms across North America. It was a set of beliefs that involved many ideas about race, religion, and culture. John L. Sullivan started this act.

Indian and Mexican inhabitants got pushed out of their own region due to the waves of American settlement. They were displaced, reduced to second- class citizens status or, placed in reservations.
