DATA ABOUT US Because people are naturally curious about themselves and others, many people are interested in information from the census. Of course, collecting data from every household is a huge task. You often hear people making statements about the results of surveys. For example, what does it mean when reports say the average middle- school student has our people in his or her family, or watches three house of television on a weekday?

You will learn how to… Distinguish between categorical data and numerical data and identify which graphs and statistics may be used to represent each kind of data Conduct data investigations by posing questions, collecting and analyzing data, and making interpretations to answer questions Represent distributions of data using line plots, bar graphs, stem-and-leaf plots, and coordinate graphs Compute the mean, median, mode, or range of the data Choose the most appropriate statistical measures (mean, median, mode, range, etc.) to describe a distribution of data Develop strategies for comparing distributions of data

Categorical Data Numerical Data Which one is it? In which month you were born? What is your favorite pet? How many pets do you have? Who is your favorite author? How much time do you spend watching television in a day? What’s your highest score in the game? How many movies have you watched in the past week? specific labels/ categories usually not numbers Counts/measures Now come up with 3 questions per type of data and write down on your chart.
