Elderly “House rich and cash poor” – Due savings-houses – But limited income – No extra money to adapt their homes to their special needs

Elderly – REVERSE MORTGAGE : They receives a monthly payment as long they live in the house When they no longer live in the house… The mortgage company assumes the ownership of the dwelling This helps to older people stay in their houses

Adapt Housing to meet special needs Children – Safety – Space – Security – Outdoor area – Good schools – Recreational facilities

People with disabilities - Include: children, senior citizens and adult - Some needs: crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, etc - Some has vision or hearing loss - All need a house to meet their needs Act 1988- Fair Housing Act: *forbids discriminations * Accessible entrances, wider doors, grab bars in bathrooms and bathtub, etc

People with disabilities - Consider: * ground level dwelling *entryway- 5foot by 5 foot *Wide doorways and hallways *Good lighting *Choose house close to public transportation lines *Near shopping area

Universal Design It is the concept of making houses easier for everyone to use Ronald Mace at Center of Universal Design at North Carolina State University developed this concept Goal… To make housing more accessible to even those without physical impairments Ex: non-step entrance; wide doorway, nonslip floors, etc. Advantage: “Usable by more people at little or no extra cost”
