2 Gold Europeans desired expensive luxury goods  Spices, silk, perfume, and jade from China and India Trade of these good controlled by Italian merchants  Charged high prices Explorers wanted faster routes to Asia  Wanted to control trade themselves instead of going through Italy

3 Glory Explorers wanted to be famous  By finding new routes or lands their names would go down in history

4 God Explorers wanted to spread their faith around the world  New lands = new people to share Christianity (Protestantism and Catholicism) with

8 Advancements in Shipbuilding Deep draft ships  Could withstand heavier waves, hold more cargo and carry more supplies Caravel  Light fast sailing ship  steered with a rudder in the rear of the ship, instead of side oars Lateen sails  Triangular sails that could be moved to catch wind Weapons  Cannons were added to ships to fight against enemy ships at sea
