1
Foundations of Physics Science and Technology
2
Technology Categories Agriculture Clothing Energy Information / Communication Medicine / Health Mining and Manufacturing Transportation Technologies can be divided into categories based on their purpose
3
Common Characteristics of Technology All are used to do something (they have a purpose) All are used by someone (people mainly) to meet their needs All have changed over time (evolves)
4
What are the types of human needs? Necessities – things you must have to stay alive Comforts – things that make life easier, but you could live without Luxuries – things that entertain or are sources of pleasure but don’t make life easier.
5
Definition of Technology Human modification of the world to meet their needs and wants or to solve problems.
6
Evolution of Technology What technologies do you use that your parents didn’t have when they were kids? What technologies did your parents have that their parents didn’t have when they were kids?
7
Evolution of Technology Timeline Share your technology event card(s) with the rest of the class Speculate on the order of the technology event cards beginning with 10,000 years ago to now.
8
Evolution of Technology Timeline 10,000 Agriculture 8,000 Cloth 6,000 Beast of Burden 5,200 Latrines 5,000 Written Language 5,000 Glass 4,800 Soap 2,200 Steel 955 Printing 510 Helicopter Design 115 Automobile 111 Rayon 104 X-Rays 73 Television (1927) 49 Nuclear Power Plant
9
Types of Events That Influence Technology Antecedent Technology – Technology that precedes a more recent technology, but serves the same human need. Example: The telegraph was developed before the radio. Both serve the same human need: communication over distance.
10
Types of Events That Influence Technology Scientific Discovery - Finding out something previously unknown or unrecognized by using the scientific process (research and experimentation). Example: Faraday discovered electrical current.
11
Types of Events That Influence Technology Invention - A new device or process created through one or more of the following approaches: study, experimentation, research, accident, synthesis, tinkering. Example: Marconi (Tesla) invents the radio in 1895.
12
Types of Events That Influence Technology Social Event – Technology that directly effects or involves groups of people. Example: First radio broadcast of a sporting event.
13
Types of Events That Influence Technology Spin-Off Technology – Previous technology used to meet a different need. Example: Sonar technology modified to produce ultrasound medical images.
