Background German- English geography cartographer
Born December 30, 1834 in Frankfurt Germany Spent most of his life in England Died March 13, 1913 in Hofhem Germany Explained and predicted migration patterns through the laws of migration Age 18: became a student of Dr. August Heinrich Peterman Professor of geography at Bedford College Taught his ideas in works like, The Phillips’s World Atlas and the Systematic Atlas.

The Laws of Migration 1. Most migrants only move for a short distance. (But people that do move a long distance usually settle in cities) 2. People from rural areas move more than people from cities 3. Females migrate more than males and young adults are more likely to move than whole families. 4. Each migrant flow produces a corresponding counter-flow 5. Large towns/cities grow more by migration increases rather than natural increase 6. All migration occurs in waves 7. The main causes of migration are economic factors

Cultural and Economical Factors of Migration
Pull factors: make people want to move somewhere else Ex. More job opportunities in another part of the country/ world Push factors: make people want to leave where they are Ex. Political issues in the place where people are living currently Common factors: economic, environmental, political reasons. In the book: page 81

Activity: Pass out cards with either push or pull factor examples Create one group for pull and one group for push.
