Course Goals The goal of this workbook is to provide you with the knowledge and practice to accurately navigate through the Banner system.

Overview What is the Banner Product Suite? u All-encompassing internet-native software applications for the higher education community u Supports functions that need to be carried out for an institution to run efficiently u Comprised of various Banner Products that have the ability to interface with each other for the purpose of accomplishing necessary tasks

Overview u The suite consists of six products. n General* n Advancement n Finance n Financial Aid n Human Resources/Payroll n Student * Included when any other of the products are licensed.

Banner Forms What is a form? u A document in which you enter and look up information stored in your database u Visually organizes information so it is easier to enter and read

Banner Forms Types of forms u Based on their usage, forms can be categorized as being either a set-up or day-to-day u Set-up forms need to be completed during implementation and before day-to-day forms are used u Generally, access to set-up forms is restricted to a few users

Banner Forms Naming Conventions u Every form has an abbreviated 7 character form name u Most of the time, forms are referred to by this 7 character form name

Banner Forms Parent Child Relationship u The relationship between types of forms is referred to as the parent- child relationship u If a parent form has been assigned to a child form, the parent cannot be deleted without deleting the child form first RelationshipForms ParentRule and Validation ChildApplication and Query

Banner Forms Form Components u All Banner forms are made up of three components: n Blocks n Fields n Records

Banner Forms Form Components – Types of Blocks u There are two types of blocks, a Key Block and an Information Block Key Block Information Block

Banner Forms Form Components – Navigating Blocks u Use the Next Block or Previous Block functions u These are icons located on the toolbar in a form Next Block Previous Block

Banner Forms Form Components – Fields u Fields are labeled space within a block u Fields are used to enter a query and to change and/or display specific information within a field.

Banner Forms Form Components – Field States StateExampleDescription Enabled u Cursor is allowed in the field. u Information in the field is displayed in black text. Disabled u Cursor is not allowed in the field u If information exists, it is displayed in gray text.

Banner Forms Form Components – Field Values u Any data that is entered or displayed in a field is a value u There are two types of values u The names of the fields that have a pre-defined value, or LOV, are labeled blue

Banner Forms Form Components - Record u A record is a group of fields that makes up a logical unit u There may be more then one record in a block u The record counter displays the number of records viewed and the number of total records u You can navigate to different records one of three ways

Banner Forms Wildcards u Special characters that represent one or more characters. u Use wildcard symbols % and _ in the search criteria. n % (percent sign) represents any number of characters n _ (underscore) represents one occurrence of a character

Banner Forms Dialog and Alert Boxes u A dialog box appears when you must choose from two or more responses u An alert box notifies you of a condition that may impact data

Main Menu u The Main Menu provides an overview of the menus, forms, jobs and Quickflows on Banner u You use the Main Menu to navigate through Banner

Main Menu Hierarchical Tree Menu Structure u Forms from the Main Menu are displayed as a hierarchy u Expand and collapse content by clicking on the plus and minus’ u Fine-grained access is the security used for Banner plus sign Select the plus sign to the left of an item to expand and view items contained under it minus sign Select the minus sign to collapse the menu into the original item

Main Menu Accessing Forms u Three of the most commonly used ways to access forms are: n Hierarchical Tree Menu Structure n Direct Access n Site Map

Main Menu Quick Flow ActionBenefit Allows for access to a set of forms in a specific sequence Enables a task to be accomplished both efficiently and completely Enables you to customize your job tasks by identifying required forms Processing forms occurs in the correct sequence

Main Menu My Banner u My Banner appears at the top of the main menu as well as the product links bar u My Banner allows quick access to forms, jobs, menus, and QuickFlows

Main Menu My Banner – Setting up My Banner u The following forms are used to create, change and copy My Banner FormCodePurpose Personal Menu Maintenance GUAPMNUCreate and change your personal menu. Personal menu Maintenance Menu and Copy GUTPMNUCopy your personal menu to or from another user.

Menu Bar u The menu Bar is located at the top of the main menu on all forms u The Menu Bar offers a variety of options for navigating within Banner u The Menu Bar is accessible anytime except when a dialog box, alert box, or list of values (LOV) is displayed on the screen

Menu Bar Components u The Menu Bar consists of several pull-down menus

Menu Bar Pull Down Menus u There are 9 pull-down menus on the menu bar, each with a variety of selections u A dimmed option on a pull down menu indicates that is disabled

Menu Bar File Menu u The File Menu contains standard Banner and Oracle functions

Menu Bar Edit Menu u The Edit Menu contains functions used to edit text items

Menu Bar Options Menu u The Options Menu varies from form to form u Some options take you to other blocks and windows within the current form, other options take you outside the current form

Menu Bar Block Menu u The Block Menu enables you to move from one block to another within a form

Menu Bar Item Menu u The Item Menu enables you to move from one field to another u The Item Menu enables you to clear and duplicate data within a form u “Item” is the Banner term that is used to refer to a field

Menu Bar Record Menu u The Record Menu allows you to work with records within a form

Menu Bar Query Menu u The Query Menu contains the functions used to search for information in the database based on specific criteria

Tool Bar u The Tool Bar is a set of icons that represents shortcuts for performing common functions

Tool Bar Default Icons u The Default Icons are the set-up of icons in your toolbar, these icons can vary u Individual users may customize toolbars u Your institution can make toolbar changes that apply to all users

Help Features Dynamic Help u Dynamic Help is the traditional help for forms, blocks and fields u Dynamic Help is gradually being replaced by online help u It is displayed on the Help Form (GUAHELP) u It allows you to identify the help text you want to access

Help Features Show Keys u Provides a list of functions and associated keystrokes for the current field or form u Access show keys from the toolbar or menu bar

Help Features Item Properties u Item Properties provides a list of all properties in the current field u It can be accessed from the menu bar

Help Features Status/Auto Hint Line u Appears at the bottom of the screen u Describes the place where the cursor is located u Error messages, processing messages, and keyboard equivalents appear here
