* Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, MA. * Both his parents died when he was only 2 years old. * Adopted by John and Frances Allan. * The Allan Family leaves for England, only to return 5 years later. * In 1824, Poe writes a poem that was never published. * John Allan inherits a large fortune and moves his family to a mansion. * After not being able to support himself, Poe joins the Army under Edgar A. Perry. * Edgar is considered a Gothic-Romantic era poet. * Foster dad dies leaving nothing to Poe. * Poe dies on October 7, 1849.

* Born on September 25, 1930 in Chicago IL. * Started drawing at 12. * Flunked out of University of Illinois because of bad grades. * Wrote for magazines and newspapers. * Had trouble publishing The Giving Tree due to sad ending. * He enjoyed theater and being in plays. * Shel is considered a modern era poet. * He was a G.I. in Japan and Korea. * During his life, he was told his poetry wouldn’t be popular. * Shel Silverstein was one of the best loved children’s authors of all time. He reminded people poetry could be fun and easy. * He died on May 8 or 9, 1999. His housekeeper found him dead due to a heart attack.

* Shel’s poetry is funny, Poe’s is creepy. * Poe was an alcoholic, Silverstein was not. * Shel had lots of friends, Poe kept to himself. * Shel Silverstein was famous while he was living, Poe, on the other hand, was famous after his death. * Poe only wrote poetry and stories while Silverstein wrote poetry, stories, plays, and songs.
