AMS-02 Ground Safety (Permanent Magnet) AMS-02 Design TIM May 5, 2010
2
Page 2 Current Status Conducted a Phase III Ground Safety Review in February 2010. All hazard reports, except one, were approved with modifications. Pressure systems (GHR- AMS02-004) remains unapproved. Package/Hazard Reports still needed information. Verifications were 33% complete as of the phase III review.

Page 3 Changes to Ground Safety Package Flight Hardware section – Delete all cryogenic hardware – Delete magnet description Ground Support Equipment section-No CGSE Operations Overview-Take out cryogenic ops description Safety Discussion-Simplified due to no cryogenics
4
Page 4 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-001 (Fire) – Still a valid hazard report. – Two causes most likely deleted/altered due to removal of on-board/GSE pumps. Mechanical failure of rotating equipment (deleted) Static buildup from rotating equipment/GSE powered equipment (altered) GHR-AMS02-002 (Toxicity) – Still a valid hazard report. – No modifications necessary.
5
Page 5 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-003 (Liquefaction of Atmospheric Gases) – Hazard report will be deleted. – No cryogenics and therefore no cause of liquefaction.
6
Page 6 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-004 (Rupture of Pressurized Components) – Still a valid hazard report. – There will be significant modifications due to absence of cryogenic GSE/flight hardware. – There are 11 causes in the hazard report. Five causes will be deleted due to no cryogenics. Six causes stay, but will be modified.
7
Page 7 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-005 (Exposure to High Pressure Gas Plume) – Hazard report will be deleted. – It was written for the flight/GSE cryogenics systems. GHR-AMS02-006 (Excessively Low Touch Temperatures) – Hazard report will be deleted. – With no cryogenic systems, there are no foreseen low touch temperature hazards.
8
Page 8 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-007 (Asphyxiation) – Still a valid hazard report, though with modifications. – Report will be simplified to only cover CO 2, Xenon. GHR-AMS02-008 (Ionizing Radiation) was deleted prior to phase II GHR-AMS02-009 (Structures, Lifting) – Still a valid hazard report. – May have to modify GHE matrices.
9
Page 9 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-010 (Structures, Stands) – Still a valid hazard report. – Need to modify and complete GHE matrices. GHR-AMS02-011 (Electric Shock) – Still a valid hazard report. – There are seven causes. Six will remain with no modifications. One will be deleted because it dealt with water leakage in large CGSE pumps.
10
Page 10 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-012 (Acoustics) – Hazard report will be deleted. – Main concerns were CGSE pumps and main cryosystem burst disk. – Both sources of acoustic hazards are gone due to design change. GHR-AMS02-013 (Magnetic Fields) – Still a valid hazard report. – There are 3 causes in the hazard report. One cause will change (production of excessive magnetic fields). Two other causes will remain the same.
11
Page 11 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-014 (Sharp Edges) – Still a valid hazard report. – No modifications needed. GHR-AMS02-015 (Excessively Hot Touch Temperatures) – Still a valid hazard report. – There are four causes in this hazard report. Two causes will be deleted. –Pumps/motors overheating –Dump diodes Two causes will remain
12
Page 12 Ground Hazard Reports GHR-AMS02-016 (Lasers) – Still a valid hazard report. – No modifications needed currently, but will be monitored as laser design matures. GHR-AMS02-016 (Tools) – Still a valid hazard report. – No modifications needed.
