Chapter 7, Section 1 A Time of Conflict

Barbary Pirates Pirates in North Africa made sailing dangerous They demanded tribute, or protection money, from European governments In 1804, pirates seized the U.S. warship Philadelphia Stephen Decatur, a 25 year old Navy Captain, snuck into the harbor and burned the ship to prevent the pirates from using it

Neutral Rights The right to sail the seas and not take sides Britain violated Neutral Rights by blockading the French coast The British also began to use impressment, or forcing sailors to serve in the British Navy

A Disastrous Trade Ban The British attacked an American vessel, Chesapeake, off of the coast of Virginia The Republican congress responded by passing a trade embargo, or prohibiting trade with another country, against Britain The embargo did little to hurt Britain, but it ruined the U.S. economy

Election of 1808 The Federalists again nominated Charles Pinckney The Republicans nominated Madison Pinckney won the New England states, Madison won every other state

War Fever Napoleon tricked the U.S. by agreeing to trade with us, and then seizing our ships Americans were torn, should we go to war with France or England?

Frontier Conflicts By 1810, white settlers began to settle on lands in Ohio that were guaranteed to Native Americans A powerful Shawnee chief named Tecumseh, felt the only way to stop white settlers was for Native Americans to join together

Frontier Cont. Many Native Americans join Tecumseh Tecumseh’s brother was known as “The Prophet” They urged Native Americans to join together and stop western dress, drinking alcohol, and using firearms and plows. The brothers sought help from Great Britain

William H. Harrison Governor of Indiana Was alarmed by the growing power of the Native Americans He warned Tecumseh that the British could not protect them Quote from “Tecumseh”

The Battle of Tippecanoe Tecumseh went south to expand his confederacy While he was away, William H. Harrison led an attack on “The Prophet” and his allies at Prophetstown, on the Tippecanoe River Harrison defeats “The Prophet” and Tecumseh is forced to retreat to Canada

War Hawks War Hawks were young Republicans in congress that wanted to declare war on Britain Most prominent War Hawks were Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun

Push for War The War Hawks worked to quadruple the size of the U.S. military Northerners sought new land in Canada, while Southerners set their sites on Spanish Florida They both were willing to back a war because they wanted more land

Declaring War By 1812, Madison felt that War with Britain was inevitable, due to the continues practice of Impressment Ironically, Britain voted to outlaw Impressment just days before the U.S. declared war
