16 – Thermodynamics: The student will… 16.1 –define Thermodynamics. 16.2 –distinguish between endothermic & exothermic reactions. 16.3 –analyze the concept of enthalpy & changes in enthalpy. 16.4 –make calculations from thermochemical equations. 16.5 –interpret reaction energy diagrams for endothermic & exothermic reactions. 16.6 –interrelate enthalpy, entropy, & temperature to free energy. 22.1 –discuss various issues involving chemistry & the environment.

-Students will have available NH 4 NO 3(s), CaCl 2(s), NaCl (s), thermometer, scale, and other measuring apparatus -Students will need to design and carry out experiment to calculate ΔH soln in kJ/mol. (movie link)

-Students will need to design and carry out an experiment in which the specific heats of asphalt and concrete are determined

-students will perform the Albedo vs. Temperature lab activity by Fraser, Seeley, and Underkoffler

-Students will work in groups to prepare a powerpoint presentations dealing with alternative sources of energy.
