IETF66 PANA WG Problem Statement for a time-basis accounting in an "always-on“ Broadband scenario R. Maglione - Telecom Italia roberta.maglione@telecomitalia.it draft-maglione-pana-acct-time-00.txt

IETF66 PANA WG DSL Internet Access Models (1/2) PPP based Model:  Provides flexible AAA mechanism;  Based on dynamic IP Address assignment;  Allows different charging policies;  Usually used for temporary Broadband connections BROADBAND ACCESS NETWORK Internet Access Node (e. g. DSLAM) BRAS PPP Session AAA/RADIUS Server User

IETF66 PANA WG DSL Internet Access Models (2/2) IP based Model:  Lacks flexible AAA mechanism;  Based on DHCP or Static IP addressing;  Typically associated with flat rate charge;  Provides “always-on” Internet connection BRAS User BROADBAND ACCESS NETWORK INTERNET DHCP Server IP Session Access Node (e. g. DSLAM)

IETF66 PANA WG DSL Model and Services Evolution Evolution of xDSL technology increases the available bandwidth driving the demand for Value-Added Services New services like VoIP and Video-Communication require “Always-on” connection model (IP-based Model) In order to bring PPP flexibility to IP-based DSL model:  a mechanism to provide user authentication and authorization is required  a way to support time-basis accounting is needed

IETF66 PANA WG Example: Application Scenario IP Session is always-on Traffic flowing inside the Walled Garden (1): Flat Rate Traffic going outside the Walled Garden (2): Time-Basis charge BRAS User ACCESS NETWORK Walled Garden INTERNET AAA Server 2 1 IP Session

IETF66 PANA WG Problem Definition User IP Session Service Session (1) Flat Rate Time Service Session (2) Time Basis Charge Start Time End Time Duration Determining the exact duration of the Non-Flat Rate Service Session

IETF66 PANA WG Web portal:  Provides user authentication and authorization  Based on http redirection: it always requires to establish an http session DHCP:  Lacks flexible user authentication and authorization scheme  “Service Session” duration may be inaccurate if the client disconnects without sending a disconnection message PANA:  Provides user authentication and authorization  PANA sessions can be dynamically and explicitly created, extended, modified, and terminated  PANA session concept could be extended to include start and end timestamps information needed for time-basis accounting Possible Approaches
