What Was The Prohibition ▪ Alcohol is the root to all evil. ▪ In 1920, the 18 th amendment banned the manufacturing and transportation of liquor. This time period became known as the Prohibition. It lasted from 1920-1933. ▪ Many industries that produced alcoholic beverages, went bankrupt due to the passing of the amendment. ▪ Though the Prohibition banned all liquor, it was hard to enforce this new ban. As a result, many people made their own liquor and sold it. This was known as “bootlegging”. “Prohibition didn’t work in the Garden of Eden Adam still ate the Apple.”

Speakeasies ▪ Speakeasies were hidden/undercover spots of establishments used to sell illegally made alcoholic beverages. ▪ Over 6 speakeasies were created after Prohibition came. It was very common for a saloon to be turned into a speakeasy. ▪ Phrases and passwords were used amongst others in speakeasies to signal they are there for the purchase of liquor. “21” was a very popular speakeasy that still stands to this day as a luxurious club. For every Prohibition you create, You also create an underground.

Effects of Prohibition ▪ As a result of the Prohibition, many resorted to making their own liquor. This liquor was also known as moonshine. The liquor was so strongly made, some people would die of alcohol poisoning within days. ▪ Prohibition also resulted in an increase of organized crimes. Profitable and violent black markets for alcohol thrived. Many crime lords, such as the infamous Al Capone, rose into control of several cities. ▪ In a study, 30 major cities had a 24% increase in crime. Theft increased by 9%, homicides increased by 2.7%, assaults and battery by 3%, and drug addictions by 6%.

The End of Prohibition ▪ Prohibition was repelled by the 21 st amendment by Franklin Roosevelt. This was done during the Great Depression. Roosevelt thought that liquor would help people who were depressed, due to the lack of money and financial instability, feel happy. It was Prohibition. Everything was off limits then.. Which made it all the more fun.
