DISINFECTION/STERILIZATION Goals include: reduction in the bioburden created by the surgical intervention prevention of cross-contamination prevention of nosocomial infection in the subsequent surgical patient prevention of employee infection (Standard Precautions)

PROCEDURE

Undrape the patient –cover the wound/dressing with a sterile towel/drape while removing outer drapes –roll contaminated drapes with contamination in the center or inside –discard in appropriate receptacle

PROCEDURE linen in fluid-proof hamper disposable drapes and supplies in plastic trash bag

PROCEDURE instruments to the processing tray for preparation for terminal sterilization –NOTE: do NOT contaminate the sterile tables until the patient has left the room or according to hospital policy

PROCEDURE STERILE FIELD Dismantle the sterile field –fluids discarded according to hospital policy –sharps discarded according to hospital policy disposable sharps in designated sharps containers reusable sharps in impervious basin or designated basket

PROCEDURE STERILE FIELD –linen in fluid-proof hamper –disposable drapes and supplies in plastic trash bag

PROCEDURE STERILE FIELD –body substance contaminated items in biohazardous trash –all others in regular trash

PROCEDURE INSTRUMENTS - instruments wiped of excess body substances instruments to the processing tray for preparation for terminal sterilization –NOTE: do NOT contaminate the sterile tables until the patient has left the room or according to hospital policy

PROCEDURE INSTRUMENTS heavy instruments on the bottom sharps/delicates protected all box locks opened all assembled instruments disassembled

PROCEDURE isolate items that can not be washer/sterilized or ultrasoniced invert basins, cups

PROCEDURE remove gown/gloves using proper technique wash hands

TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE ALL horizontal surfaces wiped/ cleaned with high-level disinfectant –includes lights, bed, accessories, furniture, equipment –NOTE: Any vertical surface contaminated with visible body substances is also cleaned

TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE floor is mopped with clean mop head and high-level disinfectant or wet-vacuumed

TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE furniture/equipment returned to proper storage location
