2 DISINFECTION/STERILIZATION Goals include: reduction in the bioburden created by the surgical intervention prevention of cross-contamination prevention of nosocomial infection in the subsequent surgical patient prevention of employee infection (Standard Precautions)

3 PROCESS  CONFINE  CONTAIN  REDUCE/ELIMINATE

4 PROCEDURE

5 Undrape the patient –cover the wound/dressing with a sterile towel/drape while removing outer drapes –roll contaminated drapes with contamination in the center or inside –discard in appropriate receptacle

6 PROCEDURE linen in fluid-proof hamper disposable drapes and supplies in plastic trash bag

7 PROCEDURE instruments to the processing tray for preparation for terminal sterilization –NOTE: do NOT contaminate the sterile tables until the patient has left the room or according to hospital policy

8 PROCEDURE STERILE FIELD Dismantle the sterile field –fluids discarded according to hospital policy –sharps discarded according to hospital policy disposable sharps in designated sharps containers reusable sharps in impervious basin or designated basket

9 PROCEDURE STERILE FIELD –linen in fluid-proof hamper –disposable drapes and supplies in plastic trash bag

10 PROCEDURE STERILE FIELD –body substance contaminated items in biohazardous trash –all others in regular trash

11 PROCEDURE INSTRUMENTS - instruments wiped of excess body substances instruments to the processing tray for preparation for terminal sterilization –NOTE: do NOT contaminate the sterile tables until the patient has left the room or according to hospital policy

12 PROCEDURE INSTRUMENTS heavy instruments on the bottom sharps/delicates protected all box locks opened all assembled instruments disassembled

13 PROCEDURE isolate items that can not be washer/sterilized or ultrasoniced invert basins, cups

14 PROCEDURE remove gown/gloves using proper technique wash hands

15 TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE

16 linens removed from the bed/table accessories

17 TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE table accessories disinfected with a high-level disinfectant and stored

18 TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE trash/linen removed from the suite suction canister discarded

19 TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE ALL horizontal surfaces wiped/ cleaned with high-level disinfectant –includes lights, bed, accessories, furniture, equipment –NOTE: Any vertical surface contaminated with visible body substances is also cleaned

20 TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE floor is mopped with clean mop head and high-level disinfectant or wet-vacuumed

21 TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE furniture/equipment returned to proper storage location

22 TERMINAL DISINFECTION OF THE SUITE gloves discarded and hands washed

23 PREPARATION OF THE SUITE

24 O.R. table remade with linen –cover sheet –lift sheet

25 PREPARATION OF THE SUITE coverings for table accessories –armboards –pillow padding –kidney rest –pneumatic beanbag

26 PREPARATION OF THE SUITE suction canister replaced

27 PREPARATION OF THE SUITE linen hamper replaced

28 PREPARATION OF THE SUITE trash bags accessible

29 WEEKLY/MONTHLY CLEANING

30 damp dust shelves –isopropyl alcohol

31 WEEKLY/MONTHLY CLEANING sterilizer filters removed and cleaned

32 WEEKLY/MONTHLY CLEANING furniture wheels cleaned and debris removed

33 WEEKLY/MONTHLY CLEANING scrub sinks cleaned and polished

34 WEEKLY/MONTHLY CLEANING air filters cleaned and replaced

35 TERMINAL DISINFECTION/ STERILIZATION
