Irrational numbers cannot be expressed as a ratio of 2 integers. Irrational numbers include: Non-terminating decimals; Non-repeating decimals; and Non-perfect squares. Rational numbers can be expressed as a ratio of 2 integers. Rational numbers include: Terminating decimals; Repeating decimals; and perfect squares. Real Numbers Imaginary numbers (i) ∞

Example 1: Classifying Real Numbers Write all names that apply to each number. 5 is a whole number. rational, real –12.75 is a terminating decimal. –12.75 rational, real 16 2 Natural, whole, integer, rational, real A. B. C. 5 simplified as 8 is a whole number.

Example 2 Write all names that apply to each number. irrational, real 1.257248… Irrational, real A. B. C. 0303 Whole, rational 0303 = 0 Non-terminating, non repeating decimal.
