Why did the blitz start ? At first Hitler aimed his bombing raids on airdromes. One night the Luftwaffe accidently bombed the city of London instead of a air base. So Sir Winston Churchill ordered a heavy bombing raid on Berlin. Consequently Hitler was furious and concentrated his attacks on London.

"We will stop the handiwork of these air pirates, so help us God." At this the young German women hopped to their feet and screamed their approval. "The hour will come," Hitler went on, "when one of us will break, and it will not be National Socialist Germany." At this juncture the raving maidens kept their heads sufficiently to break their wild shouts of joy with a chorus of: "Never, Never!" Though grim and dripping with hate most of the evening, Hitler had his humerous and jaunty moments. His listeners found it very funny when he said: "In England they're filled with curiosity and keep asking: "Why doesn't he come?' Be calm. He's coming! He's coming!" And the man squeezed every ounce of humour out of his voice.

Anderson shelter Morrison shelter During an air raid ARP wardens had to enforce the blackout, escort people to shelter and help clear the rubble.

Blackout During a blackout all lights were turned off. All houses had blackout curtains.

Although there were no gas bombs dropped on Britain, precautions were taken seriously.

The V1 fling bomb is the first ever non-piloted bomb. It took 25 mins for the V1 to get across the channel to Britain. Its nickname was the Doodlebug.

Barrage balloons were large balloons ascended in the air to stop German planes, and put them off there cores.

Evacuation was a process of escorting children and pregnant ladies to the country side.
