What is Anthropology? The systematic study of human beings and their behavior. Including their related primates, antecedents, cultural behavior and different institutions. Or otherwise the studying humans from the past to the present within different discourse communities. Related to any human studies related fields such as Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, History, Geology, Archaeology, and Medical fields. It can be integrated to any field of study.

Sub Fields of Anthropology Sociocultural- social patterns and practices across cultures. Biological- how humans adapt to diverse environments Archaeology- studying past peoples and cultures Linguistic- studying ways language reflects and influences social life.

Specific Occupations/ Careers Advertising, sales management, journalism, public relations, banking, merchandising, medical, utilities, management consulting, urban planning, counseling, and even environmental impact studies.

Types of Writing Journalistic writing, novels, poetry, and pure research in a specific field Ethnography- paper written that studied a specific culture or discourse community and how they interact. Ethnographies are non-fiction and often written as novels. Opinion Editorials (OP Eds.)- specific given topic that after gathering information you write your opinion. Very popular within majoring students in this field.

Big Topics in Anthropology Anything can be related as a hot topic in Anthropology such as: drugs and alcohol, and abortion and euthanasia. Big topics today are the ethics of genetic sampling and who owns those samples. (Especially from Native populations from long ago). Another is the florescence of Applied Anthropology as a field, and the variety of places that Anthropologists find themselves working!

Citing in Anthropology APA or ASA and Chicago Style. Different associations require different styling. Consistency on what the teacher requires as well from beginning to end.

Professional Advice for Majors Listening to all sides of the argument or specific topic. Always need thesis and focus in papers. Broaden search if there is little info, because you may be onto something others haven't yet. ALWAYS GO TO A LIBRARIAN. If needed, Google background info and try new databases. Find a mentor to help you grow in the field and make connections with the right people.
