1 Technical Update Kathi Fletcher, Cameron Cooper, Ross Reedstrom (and the Connexions staff) Objectives: 1.Community College Consortium 2.University Press Consortium 3.CNX Open for Business

2 Talk Outline Scalability Current Development Supporting Initiatives Future Development Planned

3 Scalability Current –Supporting x traffic, y amount of content –Rice network upgrades –Not at limit Future plans –Order of magnitude increase by simple optimizations/hw upgrades and better caching. –Distributed repositories

4 Future Scalability Order of magnitude increase by simple optimizations/hw upgrades and better caching. Distributed repositories

5 Plus – Printing Tools, Search Tools

6 Authoring Tools : Import Expand both authoring capability and class of authors –Word/Open Office Importer (09/04) 1/3 to ½ of new content (increasing) Bringing in NCPEA, TWB etc. –Edit-in-Place / (Like Writely???) -- default, no cnxml Wizard-like interface for all but sections –Figures and media last to roll-out X % (Something high) uses Edit-in-Place for some part of life-cycle –LaTeX Import – Math, Science, Engineering Profs Several pathways, not yet released, importance growing (what Word is to Humanities)

7 Authoring Tools (Other Stuff) Usage statistics -- –Hits by module, author –Lecturer fac positions – give me the stats Ian Barland (screen shot of author page). –Important for author impact, CCC and UP text book impact Math and spell checkers (quality) (in pipeline) (Work on) Content repository capable of storing multiple types of content – Open for Business – Presses could want to use this. XML types –cnxml + OMDoc for instance + OpenDoc

8 Language and Translation Tools Multilingual site (less wonky?) –Basic provided by Plone (45+ languages) –Site prepared Example translation (Danish try to show ) Translation contributions (pipeline) Multilingual content –Have content in 15 languages (screen shot) –Browse by languages (screen shot) –Multi-language module (pipeline)

9 Community Tools - 1 Supporting how people work – technically Workgroups (date) – creating content –Set of authors collaborate to create content –Widely used – 549 (25%?? of authoring occurs through workgroups) (simple editorial review) –(screenshot?) Using and Creating Content Interest Groups –Author Profiles – finding each other –Beta Communities – 10 active comm Discussions Content selections Browse by community Test case : TIMEA Travelers in the Middle East Class could Use of material on world-wide basis

10 Community Tools - 2 Branding for consortia, presses –cnx.org vs. cnx.rice.edu More inclusive Supports community address –yourcommunity.cnx.org (edu uniqueness) –Simple, more powerful customization – look and feel of the content by authors, communities, and organizations. (screen shots – TWB) –Endorsements link (ties into lenses, quality control)

11 Search Tools Crucial to success of book sales –Open Archives Initiative (OAI) metadata harvesting protocol (Apr. 04) –Amazon's search interface A9 (May. 05) –List directly in Amazon –Good google karma (quantify) cnx.org search tools –math search –related content, author recommended links –usability of cnx search (pipeline)

12 Printing Tools Experience –Several books created – bring props –Automation and some manual (images,#s) New cnxml version (.6) will support printing better (developed, roll out soon) –User semantics Can use for display and layout –More flexible elements -> increased control (Ex – lists contain block elements) QOOP will take cnxml directly and remove some of the manual work

13 Future CCC and UP support Authoring – Wysiwyg authoring beyond Edit-in- Place Printing Tools –Support for segue material – intro, ack –Enhanced support for bibliography, index, footnotes numbering, book sections - chapters, sections, subsection Review Tools Lenses

14 CNX Open For Business

15 Installation Tools Technical Support Tools Open Source Releases –Rhaptos released Aug. 05 Web development site -- rhaptos.org Third Party Installations –Installation in Bremen Contributing to source code, especially in the area of math support –Immediately (Sept 06) Vietnam – coming to be trained

16 Future CNX for Bus support Build on test site experience Full documentation
