1 Assessment - Year 2 Children’s performance in Year 2 is assessed by the teacher. Tests are used to inform the teacher’s judgement (This is the same as in previous years). Overall judgement made on the basis of a set of ‘Interim Assessment Criteria’ in Reading, Writing, Maths and Science The main differences are: a) Maths – additional paper on arithmetic b) Writing – additional paper on grammar. No writing test – assessment based on child’s work through the year c) All year 2 children sit the same papers – previously the level 3 papers were only sat by children expected to achieve level 3 d) Child should meet all criteria to have reached ‘expected’ standard

2 Based on Yr 2 common exception words and spelling rules e.g. past tense endings, words with -le sound 15 minutes – 20 questions – not strictly timed hurried petal

3 Questions based on Yr 2 expectations for grammar, spelling and punctuation e.g. putting verbs into the past tense, selecting a suitable prefix for a word (need to know grammatical terms) Range of question types: multiple choice, missing words, matching boxes 20 minutes – 20ish questions – not strictly timed

4 Writing assessment Interim assessment criteria include a range of requirements, including: Accurate spelling of common exception words Accurate use of grammatical constructs such as –ed for past tense, and –ing for present tense Use of ‘expanded noun phrases’ (adjectives) Accurate use of suffixes such as ‘ment’, ‘ful’ etc. Use of conjunctions to extend sentences Accurate use of contractions, e.g. couldn’t Neat, well-formed handwriting
