2 What is alcoholism? Alcoholism, also known as alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a broad term for any drinking of alcohol that results in problems. The term "alcoholism" was first used in 1849 by the Swedish physician Magnus Huss to describe the systematic adverse effects of alcohol.

3 Alcholism in the world In many parts of the world, drinking alcoholic beverages is a common feature of social gatherings. Nevertheless, the consumption of alcohol carries a risk of adverse health and social consequences related to its intoxicating, toxic and dependence-producing properties. Globally, alcohol misuse is the fifth leading risk factor for premature death and disability; among people between the ages of 15 and 49, it is the first.

4 In 2012, 3.3 million deaths, or 5.9 percent of all global deaths (7.6 percent for men and 4.0 percent for women), were attributable to alcohol consumption. Nearly 88,000 people (approximately 62,000 men and 26,000 women) die from alcohol-related causes annually, making it the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. In 2006, alcohol misuse problems cost the United States $223.5 billion.

5 Alcoholism in Estonia In 2013, the news organization Postimees declared:,,Around 60,000 Estonians, 11 percent of working-age men and 12 percent of working- age women, are estimated to be alcohol dependents. Less than 10 percent of them are receiving treatment for their problem. In 2011, 1,440 alcohol-related deaths were recorded in this country.’’ Heavy drinking is widespread in Estonia, which comes near the top of European Union rankings for alcohol consumption.
