History of Lincoln Park The neighborhood’s boundaries include Diversey to the North, North Avenue to the South, Lake Michigan to the East and the Kennedy Expressway to the West. Lincoln Park began as a cemetery, because of the public health threat the citizens demanded that it would be turned into a park in 1860. After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln the park was renamed in his honor. A final expansion in the 1950s brought the park to its current size of 1,208 acres. "Lincoln Park Southfield."
