Notes Tennessee SPI Objective: Differentiate between a mixture and a compound. Science Essential Question(s) 1) What are the differences between mixtures and compounds? 2) What are the similarities between mixtures and compounds? SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Check for Understanding Make a table, Venn diagram, or a foldable comparing and contrasting mixtures and compounds.
2
When you combine two or more substances together, if no chemical reaction occurs, then it is called a mixture. Any changes you observe are only physical changes. two or more different elements that are chemically bonded in a chemical reaction to form a new substance. Mixtures can be fairly easily separated back into their parts. What is a Mixture? AirSteelSalt WaterBlood Mixture Examples: compounds CAN NOT be easily separated Milk What is a Compound? Compound Examples: NaCl CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 H2OH2O No new substances are formed in mixtures. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds
3
EXAMPLE: A Mixture Nitrogen 7 N 14.0 Oxygen 8 O 16.0 Argon 18 Ar 39.9 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% Argon and other gases When these items mix together no chemical reaction occurs. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Air

SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture Steel 98.5% Iron (Fe) and 1.5% Carbon (C) Iron 26 Fe 55.8 Carbon 6 C 12.0 SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.
5
EXAMPLE: A Mixture Salt Water Saltwater Ingredients: 3.5 % dissolved salts (mostly NaCl) and 96.5%Water (H 2 O) Salt Water Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.
6
Blood Blood Ingredients: 55% Plasma (consists of 90% water, 8% Protein, 2% other) 45% Red / White blood cells and Platelets SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture When these items mix together no chemical reaction occurs.
7
Milk Milk Ingredients: 88% Water, 5% Carbohydrates, 3% Fat, 3% Protein, 1% Minerals SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.

SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures Cement Salad Soup CementSoupSalad No chemical reaction occurs when these mixtures are formed.
9
MORE EXAMPLES Mixtures Tea Kool-Aid Tea Energy Drinks Soft Drinks SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds No chemical reaction occurs when these mixtures are formed. Kool-Aid Drinks
10
Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures Science Tacos Pizza TacosHamburgersPizza Hamburgers No chemical reaction occurred when these mixtures were formed.

NOTE: A mixture may contain one or more compounds, as long as they do not react with each other (like Kool-Aid for example) Kool-Aid drink is a mixture Kool-Aid Ingredients: Water, sugar, flavoring agent, and a coloring agent Kool-Aid contains two compounds: (A) water (H 2 O) & (B) sugar/sucrose (C 12 H 22 O 11 ). Yet these ingredients DO NOT chemically react with each other. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds

Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science 2) If no chemical reaction occurred when you combined the substances, then it is a mixture. How do I know if something is a mixture or not? 1) Mixtures can be fairly easily taken back apart. Two Ways
13
By hand By filtration By distillation By magnetism Four Methods SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds How to separate apart mixtures
14
Sound (sizzle, snap, crackle, pop, whistle, bang, or boom) Smoke or Gas Fizzing or Foaming Explosion Heat or Light Precipitate is formed Note: Below are some common indicators of chemical reactions. Color change How do I know if a chemical reaction occurred or not? If there is no chemical reaction, then it IS NOT a compound. If you don't see one or more of these indicators, then it probably IS NOT a compound. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Remember our memory tricks: HOPESR and 4FP4CG. Remember: compounds are part of all chemical reactions.
