2 10:1 1 st Party System (1792-1820) Democrat-Republican – Leader: Alexander Hamilton – Supported internal improvements Building canals, roads to help commerce Federalists – Leader: Thomas Jefferson – Supported a strong central gov’t

3 10:1 2 nd Party System (1820-1854) Democrat-Republican Party splits – Democrat Party Leader: Andrew Jackson Favored – Industrialization, railroads, states’ tights, small gov’t – Whigs Leader: Henry Clay Favored – Congress more powerful that president – Moral reform

4 10:1 3 rd Party System (1854-Today) Democrats Republicans – Started as an anti-slavery party – Leader: Abe Lincoln Donkey represents Democrats Elephant represents Republicans

5 10:1 Third Party – Not Democrat or Republican Independents – Mix of Republican and Democrat principles Green Party – Main cause is environmentalism – Most successful Third Party candidate: Ross Perot Won 19% of vote in 1992
