UT implementation of CPS: Past, Present and Future Charles Chiu Department of Physics, CNS Art Woods School of Biological Science, CNS CPS-Brown bag, RLM4.102, Aug. 19, 2003

How does the system work? by Art Woods

 Jane has phenylketonuria, a disease caused by carrying two non-functional alleles of a particular enzyme.  Joel does not have phenylketonuria but does carry one non-functional allele.  If Jane and Joel have a kid, what’s the chance their kid will have phenyl-ketonuria? A. 0% B. 25% C. 50% D. 75% E. 100%

Asked a random sample of about 1,000 American adults about their views on the origins of humans: ‘Which of the following statements comes closest to your views on the origin and development of human beings?— A.Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process; B.Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process; C.God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years of so.’ D. No opinion Gallup poll, February 2001

A.Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process; B.Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process; C.God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so.’ D. 7 At least three kinds of questions to ask: - Problem solving - Fact/process - Opinion/belief

 Gives instructor instant feedback about how well students understand  Gives students instant feedback about how well they understand, and also where stand in relation to the rest of the class  Increases interactivity and focus of the class Benefits of the wireless system

Use of CPS in CNS and beyond by Charles Chiu

On line attendance/participation records and resources Class attendance-participation record: (See Sec II)Sec II For whole class (posting by response number) For individual students (password protected) Some interactive teaching resources : (See Sec III4)Sec III4  Early interactive quiz library: Engineer. Phys.  Comprehensive e-library (Ongoing project: Contact C. F. Moore): Bio, chem, math, phy-sci.  Interactive teaching websites

S1: Does our discussing “interactive questions” help you to learn the material? A.Yes, definitely. 22% B.Helped frequently. 29% C.Helped occasionally. 39% D.Not at all. 12%

S2: Does the use of the system change likelihood of students attending class? A.Strongly increased 43% B.Increased 29% C.Slightly increased 18% D.No change 9%

S3: Overall, would you rate the system as a positive or a negative addition to this class? A.Very positive 29% B.Somewhat positive 39% C.Indifferent 19% D.Negative 13%

Classrooms & Instructors (CNS and beyond) MM-rooms equipped with CPS :(Bulletin #4)Bulletin #4  10 classrooms(by CNS-Dean’s office) & FAC 21. Users (instructors): (Bulletin #1)Bulletin #1  Fall01: UT-CPS-Project was initiated (Physics.Dept & CNS-Dean’s office)  Sp/Su02: Pilot proj.(Woods, Chiu, Sathasivan)  Fall02: Larger scale use began.  Fall03: 20 instructors, 3000-3500 students.

Cost to the student (Fall 03)  Fraction of the cost of a textbook. Student’s CPS-registration fee: $12.5. For access to all CPS-classes in one semester. Remote: ~$5, sell back $2-3.  This is the lowest price available. We will continue to work with the vendor to keep the cost as low as possible. Pilot program : Library remote check-out system.

Is CPS appropriate for your class?  Teaching-tool: Engage the class, student feedback & online attend/participation record.  Physics undergraduate committee has reviewed its potential education merit & has endorsed it usage in physics classes on a voluntary basis.  You need to commit extra time to make good questions  to have effective Q/A sessions.  If one can integrate effective Q/A sessions into the lecture, benefit usually outweighs the cost.  Signup info: Sec I.2 (Deadline: noon, Aug. 21)

Support Network (Sec I-4) UT-CPS-support project: C. Chiu (coordinator), Bin Zhang (assistant), email/office-hrs/appts. Student tech-support: eInstruction: toll free, UT-ITS help desk Faculty support: CIT (Morrie Schulman), CTE (Karron Lewis) Hardware support: technology-classroom team(CNS: Bartelmehs …, other colleges …)
