3 Density density – the mass of an object per unit volume ex) the density of a substance describes how tightly packed the molecules are

4 An object will float if it is less dense than the liquid it is immersed in. ex) oil floats on water because oil is less dense than water

5 An object will sink if it is more dense than the liquid it is immersed in. ex) a rock will sink in water because it is more dense than water

7 QUESTION #1: Why does diet coke float in water, but regular coke sinks in water? Regular coke is more dense than diet coke because it contains 39 grams of sugar, whereas diet coke has 0.1 grams of Nutrasweet.

11 QUESTION #4: Liquid A, Liquid B and Liquid C are all poured together. Liquid B is less dense than liquid C. Liquid A is more dense than liquid C. Which liquid would sink to the bottom? (Hint: draw a picture) Liquid A sinks because it is the most dense

12 QUESTION # 5: What is the density of a liquid that has a mass of 1.70 grams and a volume of 2 mL? D = m / V 1.70 g / 2 mL = 0.85 g/mL Would it sink or float in water? It would float because it is less dense than water. (1 g/mL)

13 Buoyancy buoyancy – the upward force exerted by a fluid on an object immersed in it Buoyancy pushes boats upward.

15 Viscosity viscosity – a fluids resistance to flow Syrup has a high viscosity. Water has a low viscosity.

16 The liquids on the left have a low viscosity, whereas the liquids on the right have a high viscosity.

17 QUESTION #6: If you were given three liquids, test tubes, and a marble, how could you compare the liquids relative viscosities? Start with equal amounts of liquids in the test tubes. Drop in the marble and time how long it takes to hit the bottom.
