Spelling Workshop for Reception and Key Stage 1 Monday 14 th September 2015

There are 100 High Frequency words that children need to learn. Some can be sounded out: eg: c-a-t, m-u-m, c-a-n, h-i-s There are the words which are highlighted in orange on the sheet.
3
There are also some words which cannot be sounded out and blended together – these are called tricky words: Itheto hehersaid sheohhave wetheirlike mepeopleso beMrdo wasMrssome youlookedcome theycalledwere allaskedthere arecouldlittle myoutwhat whensaidone nogointo These tricky words have to be learned by sight.

In your pack you have word cards to help your child learn these 100 words and be able to read and write them confidently at school and at home – please help and encourage them to form their letters correctly when writing. Don’t try to learn them all at once – try 4-6 per week for your child to work on, less if they find it really difficult and more if they know quite a few of the words already. You may find that it is mainly the tricky words that your child struggles with. But it is important that they see and use these words.
5
You also have 2 sets of letters so that as well as practising to copy and write the words your child can match the letters to the phonemes (letter sounds) in the word. You might find this easier to do as a game. It is also good practice for your child to recognise the shape and sound of the letters.
6
The more confident your child is with reading and writing these 100 high frequency words the more confident they will become at trying to sound out and spell more unfamiliar words in their reading and writing. If you have any further questions please just ask or see your child’s class teacher. Thank you.
