Types of Poverty Absolute poverty –A level of poverty when only the minimum levels of food, clothing and shelter can be met –The 1USD level Relative poverty –Is the state of deprivation defined by social standards. –It is fixed by a contrast with others in the society who are not considered poor. –Poverty is then seen as lack of equal opportunities. It is based on subjective measures of poverty. –Often defined as less than 60% of the median average income

3. What is poor in the UK? 1.In your groups discuss the difference between relative and absolute poverty. Produce a slide which explains the difference (rather than just defining) 2.Find out the average income for the UK and calculate what you think the level for relative poverty would be, compare this with a poor country of your choice 3.Based on your definition of the UK absolute poverty level, discuss in your group what it would be like; what can you afford, what choices you would face etc. record your thoughts on a slide (perhaps try a mind map style) 4.Can you see any problems/issues about the definition of poverty especially when you compare counties? 5.Assume that we believe that measures should be taken to reduce poverty in the UK, evaluate the policies that you would employ 6.Record all your discussions etc. on your PPT
