TDR CH 12 PUNCHLINES D. Ene TDR INTERNAL REVIEW Lund, Sweden 2012-10-12

ESS is responsible for adopting whatever measures are needed for the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste and emissions deriving from its operation, and for decommissioning and dismantling the facility after it has been taken out of service. Swedish legislation relevant for application and operation of ESS should be meet ESS guidelines are more stringent than Swedish legal requirements ESS is committed to conservative and realistic estimation of radioactive waste and emissions, and has already made substantial progress in evaluating radiation risks. The quantitative results reported in this TDR Ch12 are evidence of this commitment and of ESS’s organizational and intellectual capacity to meet it. All ESS waste can be handled and disposed of in the Swedish system, provided that the waste is packaged in packages that are acceptable to SKB (Studsvik will make sure this is the case). Shipping of all ESS waste streams is feasible.

ESS is very serious about planning for the safe operation of the facility, and for its safe decommissioning at the end of its 40-year operating life. All calculations indicate that ESS will be a good neighbor, and will not damage the health of the community or the environment. Calculations shown that the proposed ESS design perform successfully. Operation and service of ESS facility is possible while reduce emissions into environment. Issues that can influence ESS design are identified for follow-up development ESS intends to immediately dismantle the facility at the end of its operating life and to return the site to green field status. Design features to facilitate the decommissioning cover the following topics: 1. Decommissioning plans, 2. Site factors, 3. Facilities and system design, 4. Structural design, 5. Operational design, 6. Materials design,7. Waste management.
