2. Figurative Language A form of language use in which writers and speakers convey something other than the literal meaning of their words. 3. Stanza Two or more lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of a poem. The stanzas of a poem are usually of the same length and follow the same pattern of meter and rhyme. *Similar to a paragraph in an essay.

4. Mood The mood is the feeling or atmosphere of a piece. Some examples include: A feeling of love. A feeling of doom. A feeling of fear. A feeling of pride. An atmosphere of chaos. An atmosphere of peace.

5. Personification A figure of speech in which nonhuman things or abstract ideas are given human attributes the sky is crying dead leaves danced in the wind blind justice

6. Simile A figure of speech in which two things are compared using the word "like" or "as.“ The pavement was as hot as the sun. Her hair was like a tangled mass of seaweed.

7. Metaphor A figure of speech in which two things are compared, usually by saying one thing is another, or by substituting a more descriptive word for the more common or usual word that would be expected. The world's a stage He was a lion in battle Drowning in debt
