Tests on 1 inch samples are in preparation for Shear Testing. –Samples in this set of runs have coatings on the Top Window and the Sidewall. –Samples were made this way to avoid the ambiguity of one part coated and one part plain glass as in the past. –Samples were coated with chromium, titanium, and Nichrome. Coating thickness were > 60 nm. –Testing was performed in air and in vacuum. –Majority of parts leaked. –While this is troubling this is not fatal, as these parts were going to be used for Shear Testing. Evaluated cleaning and coating steps. –Returned back to the acetone and alcohol ultrasonic cleaning steps rather than the Citranox and water rinse. –Reduced the coating thickness from > 60 nm to 20 nm. –Subsequent parts were leak tight. Shear Test Tooling July 13, 2012 D. Walters drw@anl.gov 3 Design has been completed and the drawing for the tooling has been made. The order has been passed to the local vendor. Tooling is scheduled to be ready on 7/27/2012 Vendor has been notified about the urgency of these parts.

Indium Tin Oxide coatings Coating of ITO, Indium Tin Oxide, were recently made Coating was approximately 20 nm thick –(1) Test in air and (2) tests in vacuum were completely leak tight July 13, 2012 D. Walters drw@anl.gov 4 While the coating is generally clear it presents was detected using an ohmmeter. This will also be subject to the Shear Test when it become available.

Next Steps for 4 inch Samples July 13, 2012 D. Walters drw@anl.gov 5 Double plate samples –In this test there is one side of the sidewall that has been fritted with a glass plate (with a pump out hole) while in a second step a Top Plate will employ an indium seal to joint it to the other parts. –This test will prove/disprove whether the flexibility of the sidewall is cause of the seal delamination problem. Bolted Compression Fixture –This was designed to perform very long compression tests. –At this point the hydraulic pump only has the ability to run for ~11 minutes. –This fixture will allow tests to go overnight if needed. –This can be scaled up to 8 inches.

Outgassing Tests Redux Work has begun to re-assemble the Outgas Measurement System. All the major parts are in place. The system was recently started and a few bugs need to be worked out of the system. July 13, 2012 D. Walters drw@anl.gov 6 4 inch test chamber
