IMPACTS OF BIOMASS BURNING OVER SOUTHEAST ASIA Raquel Fransisco (Phillipines) Edna Juanillo (Phillipines) Dewi Kirono (Indonesia) (Fabien Solmon )
2
AREA OF STUDY
3
Forest fire occurs quite often In 1997-1998 ENSO event: 12 million hectares were burned causing more than US$ 9 billion economic loss RATIONALES Archipelago and montainous area

(NASA)
5
To simulate impacts of forest fire burning over the region OBJECTIVE
6
CONTROL RUN 80 x 101 55 km horisontal & 10 minute resolution OISST & NNRP2 data set LBC = relaxation PBL = Holtslag Fritsch & Chappell Convective closure SUBEX large scale precipitation scheme From 15 August 1997 to 1 October 1997

BIOMAS-BURNING RUN Constructed a data base of forest fire obtained from satellite images classify it as: No burning (0), Small burning (1), Medium burning (2), Heavy burning (3)

BIOMAS-BURNING RUN Constructed a data base of forest fire obtained from satellite images classify it as: No burning (0), Small burning (1), Medium burning (2), Heavy burning (3) The satellite images are of August 17, 22, 24, 25 and 28 1997. Input the coded data of forest fire into the RegCM Run the tracer model with a change in optical property (absorbing aerosol – black carbon/soot) This is coded especially for this particular project

CONCLUSION The model can capture: the transport and removal process decrease of shortwave radiation reaching the surface ; cooling of surface tropospheric warming effect of absorbing aerosol (BC) influence on convection ??
