1. Coveted (adj.) to desire wrongfully, or without due regard to the rights of others “…not noticing him, brought Sol-leks to the coveted position.” This girl is looking down through her window at the kids below that are playing. She wishes she was down with them. She even wants to kill one of them and take their place.

2. Celerity noun: swiftness, moving with great amounts of speed “At the Rink Rapids two native huskies, Teek and Koona, were added; and the celerity with which Buck broke them in took away Francois's breath.” The bullet train is one of the fastest trains in the world.

3. Obdurate ( Adjective) Unmoved by persuasion, pity, or tender feelings; stubborn; unyielding. “Francois was obdurate, but when he turned his back, Buck again displaced Sol-leks, who was not at all unwilling to go.”

4. Deluged (Noun) A great flood; inundation “For three days Perrault and Francois threw chests up and down the main street of Skaguay and were deluged with invitations to drink…..”

5. Solidarity (noun) unity (as of a group or class) that produces or is based on community of interests, objectives, and standards “It recovered its old-time solidarity, and once more the dogs leaped as one dog in the traces.”

6. Barrack (noun) a building or set of buildings used especially for lodging soldiers in garrison “But in two days' time they dropped down the Yukon bank from the barracks, loaded with letters for the outside.”

7. Monotonous Adj. lacking in variety; tediously unvarying. “It was a monotonous life, operating with machine- like regularity....”

8. Remnant Noun- a remaining, usually small part, quantity, number, or the like. “With the last remnant of his strength he managed to stagger along behind till the train...”

9. Potent (adj.) powerful; mighty “Far more potent were the memories of his heredity that gave things he had never seen before a seeming familiarity”

10. Perpetual (adj.) Continuing or enduring forever; everlasting. “almost catlike, and a quick alertness as of one who lived in perpetual fear of things seen and unseen.”

11. Fivescore (noun) a group or a set of one hundred “ To them, this was the one feature… after the fish was eaten… of which there were fivescore and odd.”

12. Resiliency (noun) the ability to return to the original form, position “ About his body there was a peculiar springiness, or resiliency, almost catlike, and a quick alertness as of one who lived in perpetual fear of things seen and unseen.’’

13. Floundered (adj.) to struggle with stumbling or plunging movements “ When the sled started, he floundered in the soft snow alongside the beaten trail…”

14. Morose (adj.) gloomily or sullenly ill- humored, as a person or mood. “He became more morose and irritable…”

15. Perplexed adjective bewildered; puzzled: a perplexed state of mind. “ The driver was perplexed. His comrades talked of how a dog could break its heart through being denied the work that killed it, and recalled instances they had known, where dogs, too old for the toil, or injured, had died because they were cut out of the traces.”

16. Convulsive adjective: producing or accompanied by spasms: convulsive rage. “At harness-up time he tried to crawl to his driver. By convulsive efforts he got on his feet, staggered, and fell. Then he wormed his way forward slowly toward where the harnesses were being put on his mates.”

17. Consultation Noun. A conference between two or more people to consider a particular question. “… and one night they held a consultation.”
