1 February 1, 2016 Warm-Up: If the deepest hole ever drilled into the earth was only 12.2 km deep- less than.2% of the distance to the earth’s center, how do scientists know that the earth’s interior has layers? Information acquired from the motion of earthquake waves has contributed to a picture of earthquake waves.

2 Inquiry 13.1 Reflections: 1. Are there any earthquakes near mountain ranges? Continental coasts? Ocean Basins? Trenches? Volcanic Islands? Give specific examples. 2. Why do you think earthquakes are located in these specific areas? **Earthquake and volcanic activity are closely related to the movement of these plates.

3 Lesson 14 How do you think scientists use earthquake waves to tell whether the interior of the earth is solid, liquid, or gas? Earthquake waves travel through some substances but not through others, and that waves travel at different speeds, depending on the properties of the substance through which they are moving. Segment #2

4 The Earth’s Interior Watch segment and read p. 167 Reflections: 1. Why are the images on the cd-rom and in the reading drawings rather than photographs? 2. Diagram and describe each layer of the earth. Read p. 168-169
