Chapter 6- The Byzantine Empire This chapter is about the religion, rulers, cities, advances in many fields, and developments in the Byzantine Empire. You will see what happened with the conflict between the East and West in 6.5, you will learn about Constantinople in 6.2, in 6.3 you will learn about the reign of Justinian I and in the last section, 6.4, you will learn about the Eastern Orthodox Church!

6.5 Conflict between East and West 1.Why did Byzantine emperor Leo forbid the use of icons in 730? How did the pope react to Leos order? Leo thought that people had started to wrongly worship the icons themselves, not what they represented. In answer to Leos order, the pope excommunicated him.

2.What event in 800 increased tensions between the east and west? Pope Leo crowned Charlemagne Holy Roman emperor when he decided empress Irene of the Byzantines, was not fit to rule because she was a woman.

Section 6.2- Constantinople 1. There are many reasons that Constantinople was the ideal capital of the Byzantine Empire; First, it was easy to defend because it was surrounded on three sides by water, and invaders would be discouraged to find that they had strung chains around the harbor so they could not approach. Second, it was on a main trade route so it made the city and even some citizens fabulously wealthy. Lastly, because of all its wealth, it brought in many visitors, making it a very popular city. 1. Why was Constantinople ideally located to be the capital of the Byzantine Empire?

2. Constantinople was many things; crowded, loud, busy, even dirty, but it contained some good things too. It was very technologically advanced, as you can see by their use of sewage systems, and even social services were provided by orphanages, hospitals, and homes for the elderly. Because of Constantinople's wealth, it was a very elegant city, but sadly, filled with people in poverty. The harbors were crowded with people and ships arriving with goods from all over the world, and the streets were twisted, narrow and cluttered with animal feces and trash. 2. What were some of Constantinople's main features?

Question: What events forced Justinian to start rebuilding parts of Constantinople? People were destroying Constantinople and many people even got killed. The streets Where riots 24/7. buildings and other parts of the community where set to flames in Constantinople. The reason why Justinian didn’t ditch Constantinople was because His wife Theodora demanded that he stays and stop the riot and rebuild Constantinople from the riot that started.

Question: What were some improvements made to Constantinople as a result of Justinians public works project Justinian built many things to help connect the community together again. He built many important things to help the community in times of need. Justinian built new roads, new bridges, public bathes and parks. He also built new hospitals for more support and for religious reasons he built many grand churches.

Question: How has Justinian’s code affected the modern world? Justinian’s codes affected the modern world in many ways. Justinian is most famous for creating a systematic body of law. Justinian’s code expanded women’s rights. Justinian’s code also made legal codes possible.
