2016 We are involved in many research studies covering a wide variety of specialities, here are just a few: CancerStroke RheumatologyDiabetes MusculoskeletalMedicines for children NeurologicalCritical Care PainDermatology SurgeryChildren GastroOphthalmology RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, West Suffolk Foundation Trust

Clinical Trials Phases 1 & 2 Phase 1 (safety and tolerability) trials which involve first human exposure to a therapeutic agent. Phase 2 clinical trials are primarily intended to demonstrate whether or not the new drug will provide any benefit and whether that benefit is sufficiently better than standard treatments to warrant further development. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, West Suffolk Foundation Trust
5
Clinical Trials Phases 3 & 4 Phase 3 trials compare new treatments with the best currently available treatment. They usually involve many more patients than phase 1 or 2. This is because differences in success rates may be small. This is the kind of study that patients from this hospital are most often recruited into. Phase 4 trials involve the safety surveillance and on-going technical support of a drug after it receives permission to be sold. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, West Suffolk Foundation Trust

Health Technology Devices (HTD) The Health Technology Devices Programme aims to stimulate and promote collaborative research that contributes towards the development of new technology which meets patient needs. The HTD programme focuses on supporting the development of new medical devices and healthcare technologies that are capable of exploitation by the healthcare industries. HTD Calls are invited and handled through the HTD web portal at: www.healthtechnologyportal.org.uk RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, West Suffolk Foundation Trust

The First Clinical Trial in 1747 James Lind compared six treatments for scurvy (non-randomised open label) Two patients were given cider Two elixir vitriol Two vinegar Two sea water Two spices, garlic & mustard seeds Two oranges and lemons Only the sailors given the fruit recovered It took 40 years for the Admiralty to issue lemon juice to all ships RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, West Suffolk Foundation Trust

Research Grants Research for Innovation Speculation and Creativity (RISC) RISC is a response-mode funding programme established to provide research of direct benefit to users of the NHS in England. The RISC programme is for potentially paradigm-changing projects in Health Services and Public Health Research. http://www.nihr-ccf.org.uk/site/programmes/risc/default.cfm RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, West Suffolk Foundation Trust

HTA Clinical Trials The HTA programme commissions research in three different ways: 1. By advertising standard calls for research proposals that address specific topics 2. By advertising special calls for research proposals that address themed areas 3. By funding HTA clinical trials and evaluation studies that are proposed directly by researchers. http://www.hta.ac.uk/funding/index.shtml RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, West Suffolk Foundation Trust
