The way in which the body moves and maintains balance while making the most efficient use of all of its parts Positions and movements used to maintain proper posture and avoid muscle and bone injury

BODY MECHANICS Body alignment---correct relationship or position of the head, back and limbs Proper alignment Is standing straight with abdominal muscles pulled in, shoulders back and relaxed, weight balanced equally, each foot aligned with the shoulders, chest and chin held up protects ligaments and muscles Puts less stress on muscles, prevents fatigue Prevents muscle strain and spinal disc injury

BODY MECHANICS Basic Rules to ALWAYS FOLLOW Keep a board base of support 8-10inches Bend from hips and knees, keep back straight DO NOT bend at the waist Use the Strongest Muscles Use shoulders, upper arms, hips, thighs Back muscles are weak!

BODY MECHANICS Basic Rules to follow Use your body weight to push or pull objects Push, pull or slide objects when possible Carry heavy objects close to the body Avoid twisting Turn your feet and entire body when changing direction If object is to heavy to lift alone always get help Get a co-worker or medical device to assist

BODY MECHANICS Back Support Devices Some facilities may require workers to wear supportive devices These devices should be fitted correctly and snug to the body
