What is the genre of the book? How can you tell? NOT just “fiction” but biography, history, historical fiction, mystery, science, romance, fantasy, science fiction, humor, poetry, horror, epic, memoir, thriller, dystopian, utopian, sports, coming of age, etc. The genre of The Fellowship of the Ring is fantasy. I can tell it is fantasy because there are characters in the book who are not human, such as Legolas who is an elf and Gimli who is a dwarf. There are also wizards and magic in the book.

What is the setting of the book and how does the setting impact/effect the story? (Why is the setting important—how would it be different if it took place somewhere else?) The setting of To Kill a Mockingbird is a fictional town in Alabama called Maycomb. It is important that the book be set in Alabama because of the race issues that take place in the book. Tom Robinson is a black man who is accused of a crime and will be found guilty due to his skin color, not because he actually did the crime. Also, the story had to happen in a very small town so that the people all knew about one another’s lives and are tightly connected to each other, whether they want to be or not.

Major characters: Cory Mackenson and his friends. Setting: Zephyr, Alabama Climax: Cory figures out who the murderer is Conflict:Cory and his dad struggle with the murder of the man at the bottom of the lake Resolution: Both Cory and his dad figure out the mystery and catch the murderer Theme: Overcoming Your Fears Diagram of Rising Action and Falling Action

Cite one internal conflict from the book (character vs. self) and state how the character resolves this conflict. Tell how the conflict is resolved. (This is something that the character is struggling with inside of him/herself—a decision s/he has to make, a moral dilemma, an emotional question, something in the psychology of the character him/herself. One internal conflict that Frodo struggles with is whether or not he has the courage and strength he must have to carry through with the mission of returning the ring to the fires of Mordor. The conflict is resolved in the final book when Frodo, with Sam’s help, is able to return the ring to the fires—although he has to fight Gollum to do so.

Cite one external conflict from the book (character vs. nature or other character(s) or society or supernatural).Tell how the conflict is resolved. One external conflict that Katniss faces is when Kato tries to kill her. She climbs up a tree and drops a tracker-jacker nest. The wasp-like creatures then attack Kato and she is able to get away.

Who is the book about and who is telling the story? Whose point of view is it coming from? Identify the story teller and explain the point of view used in your book (tell if it is first person, third person limited, third person omniscient, alternating person, second person—author makes the reader a part of the book using the pronoun “you”—very rare form). Cite an example from your book to prove your point. Write something word for word from the book that proves which point of view the story is told from. Include the page number.

Give an example from the book of the characterization of the main character word for word with the page number. What does the characterization tell the reader about the character? (This is how the author lets us know what the person is like. This can be done through the thoughts of the character, through the things the character says and does, or through the things others in the book say about the character)

Give one example of figurative language from the book, including the page number. Name the kind of figurative language that is used. (simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, alliteration, idiom, cliché)
