Do Now 1.What characteristics must an organism possess in order to be classified as living? 2.All of the following are characteristics of living things EXCEPT A. Movement B. Made of cells C. Hunt for food D. Growth 3. How does an amoeba move and eat? 4. How is an amoeba like a plant cell? 5. How is an amoeba like an animal cell?

Agenda Making sense of this protist business Comparing and contrasting

A protist is… (2 minutes) Protists belong to the Kingdom Protista, which includes mostly single-celled organisms that do not fit into the other kingdoms. Characteristics of Protists: mostly unicellular, some are multicellular (algae) most live in water (though some live in moist soil or even the human body) ALL are eukaryotic (have a nucleus)

How are they classified? (1 minute) Protista = the very first Classification of Protists: how they obtain nutrition (How they eat!) how they move

We will be studying 4 types of protists: (1 minute) Amoeba Paramecium Euglena Volvox

Amoeba (2 minutes) An amoeba Moves using “false feet” or pseudopodia Eats food by surrounding and engulfing it Does not make its own food (heterotroph) Movie of an amoeba eating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojrkxmD6tT8 Movie of an amoeba moving: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pR7TNzJ_pA&feature=fvwp

Paramecium (2 minutes) Moves using hair-like Cilia Has two nuclei Ingests through a mouth pore Stores food in food vacuole Releases waste through an anal pore Heterotroph like the amoeba Paramecium moving & eating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS0f82ZJtvk&feature=rela ted

Euglena (2 minutes) Characteristics of both plants & animals Autotrophic Has light sensitive eye spot Can also surround & engulf food Has whip-like flagellum for movement Video of Euglena: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHZZKwrYm4g

Volvox (2 minutes) Actually form large spherical colonies work together to act like one multicellular organism Can digest food (heterotroph) as well as produce their own food through photosynthesis (autotroph) Have flagella for movement http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He9FSeGRi3A&feature=related

Review

Protists Mug Shots On your desks, you should have paper strips of different types of protists. In your groups, you will classify these protists into several groups based on similar characteristics. You 5 minutes to complete this activity. Once time is up, we will discuss as a class

Protists Foldable On your desk, you should see two foldable guided worksheets labled, “Protist 4-flap foldable” These worksheets include what needs to go inside your foldable Ms. Lloyd will discuss how she wants you to complete your foldable While Ms. Lloyd is explaining, you need to follow along with the guided worksheets DO NOT WRITE ON THE GUIDED WORKSHEETS!!! Ms. Lloyd will give you construction paper to complete your foldable. You will have 25 minutes for this activity.

Compare and contrast Create a T-chart and list out the similarities and differences between the two groups of Protists. Yes I said two groups, you’ll need to group them.
