Physical Effects Increased risk of disease! Alcohol is technically a poison that stops the body from working properly. Alcohol is turned into Acetalhyde – which is a toxic chemical that damages our DNA and prevents cells from repairing

Short-Term Physical Effects Slows down brain function – loss of balance loss of memory poor decision making misreading of situations/ danger Irritates the stomach – heartburn & vomiting Stops gag reflex – increases chance of choking Slows down breathing & heart rate Decreases blood sugar Decreases body temp Increases dehydration

Long-Term Physical Effects Increases you risk of;- Cancer (liver/bowel/mouth) Heart disease Stroke High blood pressure Stomach ulcers Cirrhosis of the liver Pancreatitis Diabetes Obesity

Short-Term Psychological Effects Alcohol suppresses your inhibition control centre in your brain. Which means while you are drinking you feel relaxed and confident. BUT, Your brain works on a very delicate balance chemicals & processes that alcohol disrupts. This changes thoughts/feelings/actions Changing happy & relaxed into Angry / aggressive / anxious / depressed

Long-Term Psychological Effects Alcohol is a depressant, It slows down your brain and central nervous system It decreases the production of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical produced by the brain to maintain mood balance. A deficit of serotonin leads to depression. Alcohol’s effect on brain function also leads to ;- Poor memory Disturbed sleep Tired & lethargic all the time Low mood

Recommendations Government recommendations = Should not exceed;- Men = 2-3 units per day ( 1 ½ pints) Women = 1-2 units per day (1 pint) Avoid binge drinking Have at least 1 or 2 alcohol free days
