Defined: Foods made from wheat, rice, oats, barley, etc. Examples: bread, cereal, pasta, oatmeal, … KEY NOTE: Make at least half your grains whole grains! Whole Grains - – contain the entire grain kernel Refined Grains - – Grains have been milled, a process that removes fiber, iron, and B vitamins

Defined: Vegetables (duh) & vegetable juice Examples: carrots, broccoli, corn, asparagus, pumpkins, …. KEY NOTE: Vary your veggies! – 5 subgroups: different color veggies provide you will different kinds of nutrients that your body needs

Defined: milk and foods made from milk that retain calcium (not cream cheese, or butter) Examples: Milk, cheese, yogurt,… KEY NOTE: drink fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk – Watch your fat and sugar intake with dairy products

Defined: foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans, eggs, nuts, seeds, soy Examples: chicken, ham, beef, peanuts, fish, lobster, sunflower seeds, tofu, KEY NOTE: choose lean meats and prepare food with little or no added fat

Nutrient A substance in food that helps with body processes, helps with growth and repair of cells, and provides energy

Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy. –Sugars (simple) –Starches (complex) Sources of Carbohydrates: - Whole wheat breads - Rice - Pasta - Potatoes (starches) - Fruits - milk

Protein Protein is essential for body growth and repair of body cells. (can also provide energy) Sources of Protein: -Meats -Eggs -Fish -Nuts -Beans

Fats Fats are a source of energy (stored) It also protects against temperature changes. Sources of Fat: -Butter - Cheese -Eggs - Meat

Vitamins Vitamins help regulate body functions: Process other nutrients Fight infection Sources of Vitamins: -Fruits -Vegetables -Whole grain breads

Minerals Minerals help your body work properly: Process other nutrients Iron in blood Sources of Minerals: -Milk -Meats -Whole grain cereal

Water Water is essential to our body because it carries nutrients. (found in all food) Eliminates waste Regulates body temperature Sources of Water: -Juices- Oranges -Milk- meats
