1 Developmental Stages Developmental Task: Something that needs to occur during a particular stage for a person to continue his or her growth toward becoming a healthy, mature adult. ~Eriksons-4 stages: Infancy- Early childhood- Childhood- Late childhood

2 Review of growth stages Infancy(birth to 1&1/2 yrs) ~Fastest period of growth Weight tripled Height doubled Learning to eat solid food Begin to walk Learn to talk Main Task= Trust Early Childhood(2-3 yrs) ~Master walking Learn to climb Push & pull Begin talking in sentences Potty training Desire to become independent  Childhood(4-5 yrs)  ~Initiate play activities  Play make believe  Copy what adults do  Begin asking questions  Learn to be creative   Late Childhood(6-11 yrs)  ~Reflect social, intellectual, physical & cultural growth  Learn to get along w/ peers  Develop a conscience  Learn right from wrong  Basic skills in reading, writing, calculating  Major part of social development= School  *Important Task- Learn wholesome attitude towards self

3 Growth of a Lifetime Adulthood Physical Maturity: State at which the physical body and all its organs are fully developed. Emotional Maturity: State at which the mental and emotional capabilities of an individual are fully developed. ~ Emotional is more important than physical. *Includes: independence, personal identity, and acceptance of self, strong values & goals ~Mature physically first.

4 ~Autonomy: Confidence that one can control one’s own body, impulses, and environment. (Example- parents let child do whatever they are capable of.)

5 Developmental Tasks- 4 Aspects: 1. Occupational Role- choosing career 2. Individual identity & Personal acceptance ~Self-actualization: develop ones’ capabilities to their fullest. (Example: Leaving home & work full-time) 3. Intimate Relationships ~Emotional Intimacy: Ability to experience a caring, loving relationship w/ another person w/ whom you can share your inner-most feelings. 4. Place in Society: (Ex: volunteer work, promote recycling) ~Three ways to determine fitting in society includes: 1.Political ideas 2.Religious views 3.Sense of community responsibility
