1. Weather Vanes

2.  What is a weather vane? A weather vane is used to determine the direction of wind. It is also called a wind vane.  Why is it important to know the direction of wind? It can help predict the weather. Wind coming from different directions will bring different types of weather.

3.  Most weather vanes are made to point in the direction the wind is coming FROM. This means that if the weather vane is pointing east, it is an east wind.

4.  For example: If wind is coming from the south it will be warmer, making the temperature rise (warmer weather).  If the wind is coming from the north it will be colder, the temperature will drop (cooler weather).

5.  Mostly used at airports, this will point in the opposite direction of the wind.  If the sock is pointing to the west, it means that the wind is blowing from the east.

7.  1 paper plates  1 straw  1 pencil  1 straight pin  Small piece of poster board  Small piece of clay  Glue

8.  Step 1: Put your paper plate upside down and mark north, east, west and south on the plate. Make sure they are distanced equally apart.  Step 2: Using a ruler measure a 4 cm triangle from the poster board, and one 6 cm square. Cut both shapes out.  Step 3: Make two small cuts in the plastic straw.

9.  Step 4: Insert the triangle and square into the small slits in the straw.  Step 5: Push the straight pin in through the middle of the straw, and the middle of the eraser on your pencil. Make sure you leave space between the straw and pencil.
