There are 6 essential nutrients Each of the nutrients have different jobs and are found in a variety of foods. Carbohydrates Fats Protein Vitamins Minerals Water

Carbohydrates A chemical composed of one or more simple sugars. Body’s first source of energy 55% - 65% of daily calories All fruits and vegetables 4 calories per gram 2 types of carbohydrates Simple- Fast Digesting Carbs (sugar, candy, white bread) Complex- Slow Digesting Carbs (fruits, vegetables, beans, potatoes)

Fat Functions include: a source of stored energy, insulates the body, healthy skin, hair and nails, satisfies hunger 30% or less of total daily calories 9 calories per gram 2 types of fat Saturated/Trans Fats- BAD Unsaturated- Good, in controlled portions

Protein The building blocks for your body Build and repair tissues and cells 4 calories per gram The last thing our body uses for energy 20% of our total daily calories

Vitamins Organic compounds that control several body functions 13 vitamins Do not give us energy – no calories Best to get vitamins by eating a variety of foods

Minerals Element essential for good health Helps with enzyme function, electrical balances, bone structure and nerve impulses Include iron, potassium, zinc, calcium, iodine, sodium, magnesium

Water The MOST ESSENTIAL of all nutrients Cannot survive without it for more than a few days Body 70% water Regulate all our body processes Drink at least 8-10 glasses a day and more if exercising or hot conditions
