Unit 4 Seminar APA, Paraphrasing, and Quoting

How Are You? How was your Fourth?

Any questions/issues before we begin? This week we will discuss APA, why we use it, and how to use it correctly. Before we begin, do you have any questions or comments about our work so far?

APA American Psychological Association APA Style consists of rules or guidelines that a publisher observes to ensure clear and consistent presentation of written material. www.apastyle.orgwww.apastyle.org is a great source

What is plagiarism? What is plagiarism and how can it be avoided? Plagiarism: Using another person’s words, ideas, or results without giving proper credit to that person; giving the impression that it is the student’s own work. Styles of citation- APA, MLA, ASA, AMA..

Kaplan University Plagiarism Policy We use APA at Kaplan University Kaplan University considers academic honesty to be one of its highest values. Students are expected to be the sole authors of their work. Use of another person’s work or ideas must be accompanied by specific citations and references. When in doubt– always cite

Why is citation required in two places? Citation is required in two places– as in-text citation and references page citation. Some of the basics of in-text citation. What we need to include for references page citation. Let us get some citation practice.

When to cite Example of in-text citation in-text citations vary between paraphrases and quotations, as well as what information is available to you on the original document that you are using:

For APA, you use the author’s last name and date of publication for a paraphrase, as in (Martinez, 2008). If an author’s name is not available Here’s an example in APA format: (“The Good Student,” 2009).

Full Citation A full citation is all of the information readers need to know if they want to retrieve an article, book, or other source cited in your paper. These citations are listed on a separate page called the reference page, works cited page, or bibliography so that the full citation information does not interfere with reading the paper.

Cite in Two Places For instance, if an in-text citation looks like this (Smith, 2002) Reference Page Smith, T. (2002). A Life Well-Lived. Hoboken, NJ: InsightPublications.

What is paraphrasing? What is paraphrasing and why is it necessary? What is the correct way to paraphrase? Why should we use more paraphrasing than direct quotes in our papers?

Original Original passage: “Educational leaders posed with the task of integrating ethics into undergraduate general education curriculum are faced with finding faculty who are interested in the topic instead of forcing faculty who are not interested into teaching a subject they are not committed to” (Stevenson, 2007, p. 5).

Paraphrase When it comes to teaching ethics in undergraduate programs, it is preferable to use faculty who have a profound interest in the subject to teach such courses (Stevenson, 2007). Do you see where this is going?

How we integrate quotes into our writing. Using a signal phrase or sentence to introduce our quotations. Block quotes– what are they? Long and short quotations

Using Direct Quotes Require three pieces of information:  Author’s last name  Year  Page number (for direct quotes) (Thompson, 2007, p. 345) (Thompson, 2007) According to Thompson (2007), “50 percent of the population have computers” (p. 345).

Using or Borrowing Quotes When you borrow words (quotations) to include in your own paper, you have to do three things: Copy the words exactly as they are written in the original piece. Enclose the words you borrowed in quotation marks, which look like this: “quotation.” Include an in-text citation after the quotation and a full citation on the reference page.

Quotation Examples “Most conventional healthcare providers prescribe medicine that only alleviates a patient’s symptoms” (Jones, 2004, p. 3). “ Alternative medicine seeks to help patients prevent illness by understanding underlying causes” (Smith, 2007, p. 99). Some people think there is a good way to balance the two for optimal health.

Finally, Block Quotes You should use a block quotation when the quotation extends more than four typed lines on the page. Maintain double spacing throughout, but you do not need to use quotation marks. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now to him vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one. (98)
