During the reception year we will be focusing on developing your child’s understanding of key concepts in order for them to reach the Early Learning Goals for each of the areas of learning. The early learning goal for reading is below:
6
At school we use a mixture of three phonic schemes called Letters and Sounds, Jolly Phonics and Read Write Inc to teach children letter sounds and skills called segmenting and blending for reading and writing. Phase One of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills. In Phase 2, letters and their sounds are introduced one at a time. A set of letters is taught each week, in the following sequence: Set 1: s, a, t, p Set 2: i, n, m, d Set 3: g, o, c, k Set 4: ck, e, u, r Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss PHONICS

Your child will begin to learn how to read. When your child has developed their reading skills through the teaching of phonics they will begin to take home reading books. Our reading books are from a variety of schemes such as Read Write Inc and Oxford Reading Tree. The reading scheme follows colour book banding as follows:
