1 What is a haiku? Haiku: It is an unrhymed Japanese verse form, consisting of 3 lines with a total of 17 syllables. 1 st line=5 syllables 2 nd line=7 syllables 3 rd line=5 syllables Goal of a haiku: To suggest large ideas, using few words. It usually includes images from nature, involving the seasons. Short, sweet, and simple=haiku (5-7-5)

2 Example of a haiku: I walk in the woods (5 syllables) The sun gently warms my face (7 syllables) I find meaning there (5 syllables) A haiku often leaves much to the reader’s imagination, keeping the language very simple. It often uses images from nature or the seasons.

3 Finish this haiku: I run very fast I never look behind me ____________________(must be 5 syllables and try to connect it to nature) Directions: Come up with your own way to finish this haiku, using a line with only 5 syllables!

4 Writing Assignment: Write a haiku Write 1 haiku with images from nature or the seasons in it. Remember, you must follow the correct pattern: Haiku=3 lines, 5-7-5 **Write the haiku on the index card given to you and turn it in today. If you would like to share your haiku with the class, let me know!**

5 Journal Entry: Choose ONE topic to write your journal entry on today. Who do you owe an apology to and why? Imagine what you would say to this person and write it down in your journal. Which student from Spinning Through the Universe do you relate to the most and why? You will be an 8 th grader next year. What are you goals for next year? If you could go anywhere over your summer break, where would you want to go and why? As usual, write at least ONE page in your journal!
