Achieving the Dream at NOVA ATD has been at forefront of several initiatives e.g. redesigning New Student Orientation Several of these initiatives have been shown to have positive effects on student retention and GPA However, these initiatives were not mandated for new students to NOVA. Based on the past success of these programs as a way to improve student success, ATD recommended six policy changes taking effect this Fall Achieving the Dream at NOVA
4
Policy Changes First time to college students aged 17-24... Must take placement tests Must attend Student Orientation Must meet with their first-year advisor
5
Policy Changes First time to college students aged 17-24... Must enroll in Developmental Courses, if placed Must complete SDV within the first year
6
Policy Changes ALL students On time means before 11:59 pm the day before the session begins Must register on-time
7
What does on-time registration mean for you? You should not tell students they can add your course late. It is really important that you check to make sure that students are on your roster
8
Can students “swap” classes? Students who drop a class once on-time registration has ended cannot add another class in that same session Advise students to “STOP...before you drop” and suggest they see an advisor
9
What do I do if a student who missed on- time registration asks for help? 1.Suggest they look for a class in an alternate session (e.g. 14 week) 2.If they believe it was a business office or financial aid issue, suggest they go to that office to get documentation 3.If they believe they have mitigating circumstances, refer them to the Academic Dean
