2 2 Background Curriculum Management is a key process in the preparation for a new academic year at UCD. Our introduction of modularisation and distributed entry of the curriculum information required us to alter the way changes were captured to configure banner.

3 3 Some Stats.. Approx 5000 active modules per term Approx 1000 module coordinators (200 > 5)

4 4 This presentation will outline our curriculum management process, demonstrate how our new application works and look at Adobe Flex and the advantages it delivers

5 5 The Process Gather the changes to the Curriculum –Modules –Programme Structures Update Banner with the revised Data –Catalogue, CAPP Publish the new curriculum

8 8 Issues INB form delivered via SISweb –Users had to log in twice, No Single Sign on –Password issues for support desk Users had to know all their modules to be able to select and edit them. Users were unhappy with the interface

9 9 Issues cont… Presenting the programme structures in an easy to use fashion was difficult. –Spreadsheets and reports were used –Users found this difficult to use –Banner was updated centrally Managing the process –Knowing users were finished was an issue

10 10 A New approach was needed A new application was specified to replace the oracle based forms. –We consulted with the relevant areas of the University –We went to tender for the development –Tender was awarded to Vidatum Technologies A new web based application was developed using Adobe Flex.

Adobe Flex is an open source framework for building and maintaining expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops, and operating systems It delivers a richer user experience easier than HTML with a lot of standard controls available immediately Sungard are developing in this environment –Enrollment management
